A Brazil reborn in Bahia!

Published on Friday, 29 September 2017

“Bahia is one of Brazil’s most propitious regions for the development of solar projects. We are glad to know the Enel Green Power parks are helping to boost this market, contributing to the creation of jobs and to the development of the production chain in the country’s renewable energy sector”

– Carlo Zorzoli, Enel Brasil Country Manager

Solar energy: the future generation

Solar energy is already a reality, especially in Bahia, where Enel has two parks in operation – Lapa (158 MW) and Ituverava (254 MW). Until the end of this year, we will conclude another solar project in the state, the Horizonte Park (103 MW).

Research in the energy sector demonstrates that renewable sources have been growing at a faster speed than even experts had predicted. For the first time, the sun has been reaching a significant participation in the Brazilian energy matrix, which is only expected to grow in the coming years. A report by Bloomberg New Energy Finance (BNEF) states that solar energy currently costs a quarter of what it was in 2009, a sum expected to drop another 66% by 2040.

“The cost of electricity generated by photovoltaic panels has been falling and it will drop even more. Many facts and projections demonstrate that. Bahia is the state in which we have invested the most in recent years. Considering only the solar projects we will deliver in 2017, we have invested around US$685m”

As well as having one of the richest historical heritages in Brazil, Bahia reflects the ethnic and cultural diversity of the Brazilian people. Thus, in addition to the environmental concern and the creation of more than 8,000 direct jobs, Enel has been implementing sustainable initiatives that aim to create shared value with the communities that live around the solar parks.

Number one in solar power!

Enel Group is the largest producer of solar energy and the third biggest in wind power in Brazil, contributing to the diversification of renewable sources in the country. Half of the current installed capacity is in Bahia. Check out the key figures for the state’s solar parks:

  • 515 MWp of installed capacity
  • Lapa – 158 MW
  • Ituverava – 254 MW
  • Horizonte – 103 MW
  • More than 1,000 GWh of electricity a year
  • Enough to supply 540,000 Brazilian homes
  • 500,000 fewer tonnes of CO2 in the atmosphere
  • US$685m invested
